Wage Disclosure Protection
The right of employees to discuss their wages without employer retaliation.
Definition
The Minnesota Wage Disclosure Protection law (Minn. Stat. § 181.172) grants employees the fundamental right to discuss and disclose their own wages, or the wages of other employees, without fear of employer restriction or retaliation. This protection is a cornerstone of pay equity efforts, enabling workers to identify potential wage disparities and fostering an environment where open communication about pay is permissible and protected. Employers are explicitly prohibited from requiring non-disclosure of wages as a condition of employment or from retaliating against employees who exercise this right.
