Wage Opportunity and Transparency Act (WOTA)
Proposed Montana legislation aimed at revising labor laws to enhance pay equity and transparency.
Definition
The Wage Opportunity and Transparency Act (WOTA) was a proposed legislative initiative in Montana, introduced as Senate Bill 146 in 2023 and with similar provisions in Senate Bill 313 in 2025. It aimed to generally revise labor laws by prohibiting wage discrimination based on sex, requiring the listing of wage information in job postings, banning salary history inquiries, providing exceptions, defining key terms, and granting rulemaking authority to the Commissioner of Labor and Industry. Although the bills did not pass, they represented a significant effort to introduce comprehensive pay equity and transparency measures in the state.
