Social Inspectorates

Government bodies responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with social and employment laws in Belgium.

Definition

Operating under the Federal Public Service (FPS) Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue, social inspectorates are empowered by the Social Penal Code to investigate, monitor, and enforce adherence to Belgian social and employment legislation. Their responsibilities include providing information and advice, conducting inspections, verifying social documents, and drawing up formal reports on infringements. They play a critical role in detecting non-compliance and initiating administrative or criminal proceedings to ensure workers' rights, including equal pay, are protected.
