Overtime
Work performed beyond regular working hours, typically requiring consent and entitling higher pay.
Definitions (2)
Overtime refers to work performed in excess of the statutory or agreed-upon regular working hours. Under the Working Hours Act (872/2019), overtime typically requires the employee's consent and entitles the employee to higher compensation than their regular wage. For instance, the Act specifies increased pay rates for overtime, such as a 50% increment for the first two hours and a 100% increment for subsequent hours. The Act also sets limits on the maximum amount of overtime that can be performed.
Overtime (Övertid), as per Section 7 of the Arbetstidslagen, is defined as any working time that extends beyond the established ordinary working hours (Section 5) and on-call time (Section 6). The Act sets strict limits on overtime, distinguishing between 'general overtime' (up to 200 hours per calendar year) and 'extra overtime' (up to 150 hours per calendar year under special circumstances), to prevent excessive workloads.
