Office of the Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson
An independent state institution responsible for supervising the implementation of equal opportunities laws in Lithuania.
Definition
Initially established as the Office of the Equal Opportunities for Women and Men Ombudsperson, this independent state body is responsible for overseeing the enforcement of the Law on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men and the broader Law on Equal Opportunities. It investigates complaints of discrimination, issues recommendations, warnings, and can initiate administrative proceedings and impose fines. The Ombudsperson is appointed by the Seimas and is accountable to it, playing a crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights and equal opportunities in Lithuania.
