A 'job class' is a classification used in pay equity analysis to group together positions that share similar duties, require similar qualifications, and are subject to the same or similar compensation plan. Employers are required to identify all job classes within their workplace and determine their 'gender predominance' (predominantly male, predominantly female, or gender neutral) as a foundational step in the pay equity process. This categorization is essential for comparing compensation between different groups of employees.
A Job Class is a grouping of positions within an employer's workplace that share common characteristics in terms of the nature of the work performed, the skills required, the effort expended, the level of responsibility involved, and the working conditions under which the work is carried out. For the purpose of pay equity, job classes are categorized as predominantly male, predominantly female, or gender-neutral, typically based on the gender composition of the employees within that class (e.g., 70% or more of one gender). This classification is a fundamental step in the pay equity process to enable comparisons between different jobs of equal value.
