Gross Wages
The total amount of an employee's earnings before any deductions are made.
Definition
Gross wages represent the total compensation an employee earns from their employer for services rendered during a specific pay period, prior to the subtraction of any taxes, benefits contributions, or other deductions. This figure is fundamental to understanding an employee's total earning capacity and forms the basis upon which all deductions are calculated. Under the Pay Stub Protection Act, employers are explicitly required to clearly state the total gross wages earned by the employee for each pay period on the provided pay stub, ensuring employees have a transparent view of their full compensation before any withholdings.
