Equality of Opportunity
The State's commitment to ensuring all citizens have an equal chance in employment and public life, free from arbitrary barriers.
Definition
As enshrined in Articles 19(1) and 29(1) of the Bangladesh Constitution, 'equality of opportunity' refers to the fundamental principle that all citizens should have an equal and fair chance to access and succeed in employment or office in the service of the Republic, as well as in all other spheres of national life. This principle mandates the State to actively work towards removing social and economic inequalities and ensuring that an individual's background, including religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth, does not create unfair advantages or disadvantages in their professional and economic advancement. It implies not just formal equality of access but substantive equality of treatment, including in remuneration.
