Equal Pay for Same Work

Principle mandating non-discrimination in wages based on gender for identical tasks.

Definition

The principle of 'equal pay for same work' as enshrined in Section 345 of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, dictates that no discrimination on the basis of gender shall be made in wages for performing identical tasks. While a significant step towards gender pay equity, this provision is narrower than the international standard of 'equal pay for work of equal value,' which considers jobs of comparable skill, effort, and responsibility, even if the tasks are not identical, thereby limiting its scope in addressing systemic pay disparities.
