Equal Pay for Equal or Equivalent Work

The principle that men and women performing the same job or work of comparable value must receive equal remuneration.

Definition

This fundamental principle, enshrined in the Netherlands Pay Transparency Implementation Act and the EU Pay Transparency Directive, mandates that employers provide equal remuneration to men and women for work that is either identical or deemed to be of equivalent value. The assessment of 'equivalent work' is based on objective and gender-neutral criteria, such as skills, effort, responsibilities, and working conditions, ensuring that subjective biases do not lead to pay disparities. This concept extends beyond basic salary to include all components of remuneration, both monetary and in-kind.
