Dual Discrimination

Discrimination based on a combination of two protected characteristics.

Definition

Dual discrimination occurs when an individual experiences less favourable treatment due to a combination of two protected characteristics, such as race and disability. The Equality Act 2010 introduced limited provisions for dual discrimination, and the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill is expected to strengthen these protections. This concept acknowledges that discrimination can be intersectional, where the combined effect of two characteristics leads to a unique form of disadvantage that might not be fully captured by claims based on a single characteristic.
