Comparable Character of Work

Work requiring similar skills, effort, responsibility, and performed under similar working conditions within the same establishment.

Definition

In the context of the Maryland Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, 'comparable character of work' signifies that employees of different sexes or gender identities should receive equal pay if their jobs require a similar composite of skill, effort, and responsibility, and are performed under similar working conditions. This standard is broader than 'equal work' and allows for comparisons between jobs that may not be identical but are substantially similar in their overall demands and requirements. For the purpose of the Act, employees are deemed to work at the 'same establishment' if they work for the same employer at workplaces located in the same county of the state.
