Comparable Work

Definition 1 of 4

Definition 2 of 4

This term refers to different jobs that, when evaluated against objective criteria such as skill, effort, responsibility, and working conditions, are determined to be of equivalent value to an employer. The Act emphasizes that 'comparable work' does not necessarily mean identical work, but rather work that contributes equally to the organization's objectives, thereby allowing for broader comparisons to identify and rectify pay discrimination that might arise from the undervaluation of certain roles.

Comparable Work (同一価値労働) refers to work that, while potentially differing in its specific tasks, job titles, or departments, is deemed to have equal value when assessed against objective criteria such such as skill, effort, responsibility, and working conditions. This principle, central to ILO Convention No. 100, ensures that pay is based on the intrinsic value of the work performed, rather than the gender of the worker, aiming to eliminate systemic pay discrimination.
