Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz (AGG)

German General Equal Treatment Act, prohibiting discrimination on various grounds, including gender.

Definition

The Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, or General Equal Treatment Act, came into force in 2006. It is a comprehensive anti-discrimination law in Germany that aims to prevent or eliminate discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation. In the context of employment, the AGG prohibits discrimination in access to employment, employment conditions (including pay), vocational training, and promotion. It provides legal recourse for individuals who experience discrimination, including claims for compensation and damages, and prohibits retaliation.
